Shine and Sign: Quantum-Secure Authentication & Time-Bin Quantum Communication (TN, ET)

Designing and building photonic quantum systems for quantum-secure authentication and next-generation quantum communication using spatial light control, interferometry, and time-bin encoding.

Quantum communication is moving from theory to real-world deployment and you can help build it. Within the UQQL project, Saxion’s Applied Nanotechnology research group, together with the University of Twente, offers an exciting internship/graduation opportunity for bachelor and master students to join our Applied Quantum Lab. Here, you will work hands-on with cutting-edge photonic systems that combine quantum optics, secure communication, and experimental engineering.

This project focuses on Quantum Secure Direct Communication (QSDC)

You will contribute to the development of quantum-secure direct communication systems based on time-bin encoded quantum states. The setup uses high-speed phase modulators and fiber-based interferometers to generate and analyze early/late photon states and their superpositions, compatible with modern telecom infrastructure.

Depending on your interests, you may work on:

  • Fiber-optic interferometric setups
  • High-speed electro-optic phase modulation
  • Synchronization and timing electronics
  • FPGA or software-based control systems
  • Stability, calibration, and system integration

The ultimate goal is to develop practical and scalable quantum communication technologies that can integrate into future photonic networks.

Whether you enjoy building optical experiments, designing electronics, coding measurement software, or exploring quantum protocols, this project offers a unique opportunity to combine theory with hands-on experimentation. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment together with researchers, engineers, and students at the forefront of applied quantum technology in the Netherlands.
