PhotonDelta (MT, EE)

Developing and optimizing a pick-and-place process on a microassembly machine for the accurate assembly of photonic chips and other microcomponents.

As photonic and microtechnologies continue to shrink in size and increase in complexity, accurate and repeatable assembly processes are becoming increasingly important. Manual assembly is often too slow, inconsistent, or insufficiently precise to meet future production demands. Automated microassembly solutions are therefore essential for improving production speed, accuracy, scalability, and reliability in next-generation high-tech products. These processes can be applied to the packaging and assembly of photonic chips, optical components, sensors, and other miniature devices used in applications such as medical diagnostics, telecommunications, lab-on-chip systems, and advanced sensing technologies.

Within the Applied Nanotechnology research group at Saxion, advanced microassembly processes are being developed for photonics and precision engineering applications. For a Bachelor internship in Mechatronics, we are looking for a student who wants to contribute to the development of a high-tech microassembly machine for packaging photonic chips and assembling other microcomponents.

During this internship, you will work on understanding, operating, and further developing the microassembly platform that has recently been installed. The main focus will be on realizing a reliable pick-and-place process in which small chips or components are accurately transferred from position A to position B and precisely aligned. You will gain insight into the operation of the machine, including actuators, motion systems, vision systems, and control software. The project combines mechatronics, precision engineering, and automation in a challenging high-tech environment.

Project duration:
31-8-2026 – 31-01-2027 OR
