Synthesis of Polymer Brushes on sensor surfaces.

One of the research lines of the Applied Nanotechnology research group (Saxion, Enschede) focuses on the development of gas sensors. The coating on the sensor-surface has a determining influence on the selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor. Polymer Brushes form a unique class of polymers, as they can be formed as an extremely uniform coating with an very high degree of control over the thickness.

The aim of this project is to form several types of polymers brushes by varying the functional groups on the polymer-backbone and/or by varying the thickness of the coating. The brushes will be characterized using various techniques (digital microscope, contact angle apparatus, AFM, profilometer). If time permits, the brushes will be applied on sensor-surfaces, after which the performance of these as gas sensors will be determined.
